Today we’d like to introduce you to Seville McKinnon.
Hi Seville, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My career started in 2007 at 19 years old. After completing cosmetology school, I started my first job as a salon assistant. I was so excited and unaware of the journey ahead of me. The salon was new with experienced and fresh talent. I came in as the baby of the group. The salon owner was a former hairstylist for my grandmother and me at another salon. She was aware that I planned on being a hairstylist after high school. So my grandmother(unknowingly to me) was giving her updates about my progress in school. So I have her to thank for helping me get my first job. The salon was team-commissioned. I assisted for three years and transitioned to a full-time hairstylist. This salon was like no other salon I had ever seen in my life. It was fully staffed, and clients came in every 30 minutes, from 9-5 almost daily. Every stylist was busy and worked on strategic schedules. It was a place I knew I wanted and needed to be a part of. My husband and family have played been a major role as my support system. My faith in God and being there molded me into the salon owner I am today. I was a part of the team for nine and a half years. With the support of my husband, in September 2015, I opened my baby, Textures Studio in Cordova, TN. Textures is more than a salon. It is a vibe. It is a home. There’s so much love that spreads through the salon. I wanted to build a business on not only skill, but passion, faith, education, and love. Relationships have started and thrived. Confidence is regained. The salon culture has been redefined. We want our guests to receive an experience with their service. A place you run to for relaxation and a good time. We value continued education and goal setting for our service providers. We value continued education and goal setting for our service providers.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think there’s such a thing as a smooth road to owning a business. At the beginning of my ownership, I had to learn business. I was familiar with being a hairstylist and doing that well. Now I had to learn how to coach and train other people for the culture and standard of my business. One of the major challenges I’ve faced was getting through COVID. Working daily to keep the space open without overcrowding. We want our clients to understand how important it is to come alone. How important it is to cancel appointments if you are not well. Sometimes we face challenges with finding like-minded clients and service providers. We want people to know that we are a hair and skincare salon. We won’t offer anything that will compromise that.
I have also experienced my own personal challenges with loss. Making those decisions to take personal time to heal. Making sure I am ok, so I can show up for my team. Trusting in God to be my source in uncertainty. Although these moments have been challenging, our culture has been strong enough to maneuver and survive in the chaos.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a salon owner and licensed hairstylist. I specialize in all things related to healthy haircare. I believe I am known for just that. I have made haircare my priority behind my chair and in my salon. I am dedicated to the education of my craft. What sets us apart from other salons is our team effort. We truly thrive because of each other. Sometimes it’s strange to new clients because they can’t believe that we work together. They can sit in any chair in the salon and have confidence in knowing they will have the same care and satisfaction. We love what we do, and it shows in our work. I am proud to say that I have made it this far. Ownership is very challenging but also rewarding. I am proud to say that I have not given up. I am determined to accomplish any goal I set. I am always proud to see my team accomplishing everything they set out to do. My greatest accomplishment is, I have never compromised my faith and the values instilled in me by my grandmother.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I love community and support. I love to team up with other salons for education or just a fun time. I am open to all opportunities to give back and help others grow.
