Today we’d like to introduce you to Shranda Williams.
Hi Shranda, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I lost my fiancé in March 2021 and wanted to do something positive with the insurance money, I started my nonprofit Brothers and Sisters of the Light. The name comes from me being an active member of International Free & Accepted Modern Mason and Order of the Eastern Star. Since November 2021, I have been supporting the Joint Council Affairs Department, Marshal Council, and Memphis & Shelby County School System. I wanted to be able to reach the youth, elderly, and disadvantaged. For the last 3 years, I have been an actual partner with Memphis & Shelby County Schools, where we have adopted Cherokee Elementary School in the heart of South Memphis.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Running a NPO is hard work! I have 3 jobs just to keep it operational. I am often in search of ways to bring more attention to our Non-Profit organization and to obtain funding to keep it going. I don’t know how much longer I can continue to work 3 jobs to do, but until then I plan to keep moving. I have been truly blessed to partner with several awesome people and companies so far that have supported us.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am currently employed for Concentric of MHI. I have been there for 3 years and as their billing and dispatch coordinator. I have a good relationship with my Service & Sales Managers and technicians. I am also a State Notary for Shelby County and an active member of the best sorority, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. I love giving back to my community, helping others, and am most proud of my 5 grandchildren. The thing that sets me apart from others is the depths that I am willing to go to make my dreams a reality at 50.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I grew up in a small town called Indianola, MS where everybody knew everybody. I am the oldest of 5 sibling. I was always the chubby kid growing up, which wasn’t any problems in my world and was always a daddy’s girl. I was always in trouble for talking in school, I think that plays a big part of who I am today. I had my 1st child at the age of 15, was married 1st time at 16, and played the flute in the high school band for several years. After high, I went on to several colleges, different marriages, moved to Memphis, finished college with a dual Masters in Leadership and Business Management. I love meeting new people, traveling, fellowshipping with my organizations. Since being on the heavier side all my life and struggling with weight, I love plus size fashion.
