Hi Tawanda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey in the fashion industry has been profoundly inspired by my grandmother, Julie Mae. From a tender age, I marveled at my grandmother’s impeccable style. I vividly recall my grandmother wearing exquisite suits and hats that perfectly complemented each other. She would often ask, ‘How do I look?’ and I would enthusiastically respond that she looked absolutely stunning. However, it wasn’t until years later that I discovered my true calling. I opened my boutique with a mission to empower women to express themselves authentically, free from judgment. My boutique serves as a safe place where women can experience healing and transformation through the joy of shopping.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
De’Kar Fashions opened during COVID in 2020, a bold move that sparked both doubt and determination. I received much backlash, but I chose to see it as an opportunity to rise above the noise and prove that with hard work and perseverance, anything is possible. That year turned out to be one of our most triumphant years, teaching me that embracing challenges is the key to unlocking true potential. Like many others, I faced struggles along the way, but I refused to let fear hold me back. Over the years, operational costs increased, responsibilities multiplied, and marketing strategies became more complexed, but I remained steadfast, always seeking innovative solutions to overcome each obstacle.

Our boutique is a collection of inspiring styles for women and young ladies, celebrating individuality and self-expression. We take pride in offering cute, chic, and trendy styles in sizes Small up to 4XL, because every woman deserves to feel confident and beautiful. What sets us apart is the transformative shopping experience we offer, where every customer is treated with dignity, respect, and courtesy. I am deeply humbled by the opportunity to witness women embracing their authentic selves, leaving our boutique with a renewed sense of confidence and purpose. I want others to know that we are more than a boutique – we are a sacred space where women can express themselves, share their stories, and connect with one another. We have created an atmosphere that nurtures growth, empowerment, and self-love, and we invite you to experience it for yourself.

Owning a business in a city that is so heavily populated by people who love style is a true blessing, and a big part of why we are so successful. The support is incredible, and the community is so warm and inviting. If I had to describe what I love most about our city, I would say it’s the unbreakable bond of sisterhood. Witnessing women connect on a deep, meaningful level, both mentally and spiritually, is a vital part of our culture at the boutique. We are all connected, and we have the power to share our experiences, uplift, and inspire each other.
