Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Baisden.
Hi Tyler Baisden, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
New Fire Music started as a music blog founded by myself (entrepreneur), Michael Reaves (Graphic Designer), and Safir Robinson (Musician). Since high school, music has played such a huge role in our friendship. We loved to discover new artists early and share them with our peers.
So on Black Friday in 2017, the New Fire Music platform was born. It started as a simple Instagram page where we would post new music clips, sometimes including a blog over at newfiremusic.net. The goal was always to turn it into a business, but I figured we’d have fun gaining an audience and figuring out what to sell later.
We’d post underground music from upcoming artists in Hip-Hop and R&B. Soon enough, other artists trying to make a name for themselves would contact us for press or an Instagram post. From there, the lightbulb went off.
Since 2018, I’ve been studying the music industry and trying to figure out the most useful digital services to offer upcoming artists. We started with SoundCloud and Spotify playlisting, then included blog/interview placements, and ultimately overall career consultation and other digital advertising campaigns.
Our goal remains to partner with record labels and service providers to offer upcoming artists the best strategies to get to the next step in their careers.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a smooth road because personally, I’ve never really been in a rush. I can’t say it hasn’t been stressful! Luckily, Mike, Safir, and I all have full-time jobs so we are afforded the time to make well-calculated moves and let the company/brand grow organically.
Since launching our services in 2019, we’ve had the chance to work with over 100 artists across 10+ states and six different countries. No matter what anybody says that’s a real impact. If the brand was gone tomorrow that impact still exists. The most important things to me are impact, consistency, and steady growth.
It took a while for us to gain our footing and figure out what we actually wanted to do. We launched the idea in November (2017) and didn’t offer any services until April 2019. There are so many different services out there, unfortunately not all doing good business.
There is a lot of natural skepticism from artists, especially when it comes to online services. I think we’ve built a lot of trust between us and the artists we work with. Mainly because we are real people studying the industry trying to find the right people to actually help.
We are just as curious and driven as the artists we work with.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
NEW FIRE MUSIC is a community of artists, journalists, audio engineers, graphic designers, videographers, and other service providers that support rising talent in emerging Hip-Hop and R&B. We consider ourselves one of the best music discovery platforms for new artists.
We are known for our ‘New Artists 2022’ Spotify playlist and the wide range of music services that we offer. We want artists at any level to be able to gain something from the platform and for listeners to enjoy the fire music that we discover.
Brand wise, I am most proud of helping emerging creatives believe in themselves. This is not an easy field at all, but we make artists feel like their dream is possible with the right planning and strategy. Our clients know that as soon as we come across a new strategy that will help them, we’ll let them know what’s up.
I’m also proud that this is something that I started with my real friends. We all have separate talents that help the brand grow. The brand grows as we grow! And that’s been great to see and be a part of. Link to Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5TcumnWUXzlIPmeqhaOBwn?si=8d43fb7be67842ac.
Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
It’s important to continue to connect with the team and the people you love.
Business-wise, you need to continue to talk to one another to stay invested, follow up on ideas, and grow. Life-wise, you have to connect with your family when you’re feeling secluded.
You have to continue to do the things you love and take breaks when you need them!
