Meet Whitney Houston of East Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Houston

Whitney, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2020, as the pandemic took hold, I was a 16-year-old girl, isolated from my friends and craving comfort and connection. The isolation left me feeling deeply sad and eventually, depressed. One day, in a moment of desperation, I decided to write down my feelings. A few days later, I visited one of my closest friends at the time. She introduced me to songs she had created using a beat-making app I had on my phone and she showed me how to record, and I was instantly amazed by the possibilities.
Later that night, I went home, found a beat on YouTube, and turned my raw emotions from my diary into a song. I closed myself in my closet, sat on the floor, and began singing my heart out. This experience was so freeing and therapeutic for me, and that was the moment everything changed for me. It showed me that I could really do this. On top of music my big sister Jazmine Houston has always been a motivating factor. She is a freelance photographer and she’s always encouraged me to create ultimately helping me to start selling paintings and other forms of art to this day. Sometimes I tagalong with her to do photography as well. I learned everything I know about photography from her. We still continue to explore our creative sides and pour into our community.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When I first started, I thought that songwriting would be super hard. However, it came easy for me because all I had to do is write down my emotions and how I’m feeling and make things rhyme. I had to figure out how to mix and master, which came pretty easy as well considering it’s done all on my phone through Bandlab.
The only issues that I would say that I faced is putting myself out there and finding a studio with reasonable prices but also good producers consistently.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a 20 Year old, R&B singer-songwriter from Memphis, TN. I am passionate about collaborating with artists from diverse genres like Afrobeat, reggaeton, and dancehall etc. Occasionally, I also make beats. Beyond music, I’m known for my love of travel, community, volunteerism, art, and photography. What I’m most proud of is the connections I’ve made through my music and other creative outlets. I enjoy collaborating with people I know locally & internationally—whether they’re involved in filming, producing, painting, or other fields—so that we can support each other and grow together. I also find it exhilarating that I have listeners and supporters in different countries outside of the US. Some things that make me different in this field is that I am truly vulnerable in my songs, which reflect my commitment to love, empathy, purpose, community, and God. In a world full of meaningless music, I strive to create work that encourages healing, growth, purpose, and upliftment. My goal is to inspire others to embrace their emotions, heal, and support each other, always with intentionality.

What’s next?
The night I dropped my SELF EP, I decided that it’s time to stop running away from my light. So many people have told me I have something special and different so I want to continue and grow my abilities. So ultimately I’ll be putting myself out there whenever I get the opportunity and pouring into the passions that I have. Relatively soon I am going to move from producing music on my phone and into an actual studio. I am also currently working alongside my sister Jazmine Houston with photography.
