Today we’d like to introduce you to Charlie Couvillion.
Charlie, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It’s hard to give an exact start, I’ve been making things since I was a kid, whether that’s with music, photography, videography, or design, I’ve always enjoyed creating, no matter what medium.
During high school, I made videos and music with my friends whenever I could, always wishing I could quit school and do that full time. During what would’ve been my freshmen year of college.
I worked at an advertising agency downtown as a video editor and freelanced all around Memphis doing all sorts of creative jobs, mainly in the music scene.
After that, I moved out to Los Angeles with a team working with Fresco Trey, after spending about half a year in California with them, I’m now focused on what I can do in my hometown, Memphis, TN.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I’d say the biggest bump in the road was not going to college. It wasn’t easy breaking that news to everyone in my family. Right after I graduated high school, I got to work right away, and have never looked back.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Right now, the biggest thing that I’m working on is forming an independent record label, based in Memphis. But that’s a little bit under wraps until all of the legal stuff is situated.
I’d say I’m a bit of a “jack of all trades” but since I’m 19, I don’t add the “master of none” part because I don’t think I’ve had time to master anything yet. When I’m in Memphis I focus on recording and producing with artists, but in LA I was mainly doing photo & video work, although I do a bit of it all wherever I am.
I don’t really consider myself a graphic designer but I have definitely done a handful of cover art, some of which you may have seen before, and other miscellaneous design work for artists.
Honestly, I don’t really consider myself any of the titles that go with these jobs. I’m not a “mixing engineer” or a “photographer” etc. I don’t think I can compete against professionals in each field as well as I can create the overall vision for a project and execute it.
I’m the proudest of my music production though, I feel like that is the one area in that I can compete. There are several different types of producers out there, some are in it for the money, some for the clout, and some because they simply enjoy it, I fall in the last field.
I get messages all the time asking for beats, or where my website for selling beats is, my answer to all of them is “I don’t sell beats” although I probably have more beats on my hard drive than most YouTube beatmakers, and it could be a great source of income, I’m just super selective on who I work with, and who I produce for.
What makes you happy?
Finishing something makes me happy.
With art and any other sort of creative work, there never really is a point where it is “done” there’s always something else you can tweak, or add, or change, etc. and this is why I’d say only 1 out of every 500 songs, or videos, or photos that I’ve done are available to the world.
Therefore, finishing a project is one of the most difficult things that I have ever done in my life, and why doing so makes me happier than ever.
