Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Roneferiti Fowler.
Hi Dr. Roneferiti, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I am a licensed psychologist with over twenty years of experience in the mental health field. I am a native Memphian. I am a graduate of Overton High School and completed my education at The University of Tennessee at Knoxville, The University of Memphis and finally my doctoral internship at The Ohio State University. Memphis has not only been my backdrop; it has also been the woven into the fabric of who I am as a person and as a psychologist. I knew throughout my educational journey that my long-term goal was to return home to Memphis to work with those in my own hometown.
I have worked in an array of settings with ages as young as three, though our senior population. I have addressed a broad variety of treatment concerns with a great deal of my experience being with young adults, the collegiate population and those navigating transitional issues to the health concerns while working with Oncology and Hematology patients at West Cancer Center. My work experiences then led to branching off into creating an assessments and testing program through Midsouth Mental Health and eventually becoming the director of Mental Health Resources Intensive Outpatient Program where I also provided supervision for pre-licensed clinicians.
While I have enjoyed working in a variety of populations, individual therapy has always been the cornerstone of my practice. I enjoy the challenges of working with each unique case as well as the camaraderie of working with other clinicians which made joining Hope Evergreen’s group practice and subsequently becoming clinic manager of the Germanton location, a natural transition.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There have definitely been struggles and challenges along the way. One of the greatest challenges as a clinician has always been identifying ways to increase access to services. Those with low to moderate incomes, those who are un-insured or under-insured and those with issues related to transportation; face the greatest challenges to accessing mental health services and are often the ones who need it the most. Thankfully, Hope Evergreen LLC accepts most major insurances, offers a sliding scale and has partnered with several grant-based programs, including Youth Connect and Ollie’s Branch to expand our community outreach. While a majority of our sessions are held in person, the option to offer telehealth services has been helpful in accommodating both transportation concerns and busy schedules.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
By working in the mental health field for the past twenty years, I bring a wealth of experiences. I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy which focuses on helping individuals to identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors to improve emotional well-being and coping skills. I use family systems theory as a psychological framework to view the family as an interconnected emotional unit, where changes in one member affect the entire system. I also utilize Humanistic therapy, which is a client-centered and holistic approach that prioritizes the individual’s unique experiences, strengths, and potential for growth rather than focusing solely on symptoms or past events. I strive to always meet clients where they are and to utilize a strengths-based approach, which allows them to be free to be themselves. One thing that sets me aside is my encouraging the use of creative outlets and self-expression both in and out of therapy. My creativity and the desire to always make room for my creative outlets prompted me to develop One Creative Mind Custom Creations & Designs, a creative apparel and craft company where I make and sell journals, shirts, gifts and other motivational items that include cultural or motivational phrases and images. One thing that I am most proud of is my ability to make therapy relatable. I have the unique ability to call someone out and hold their hand at the same time while we address how we plan to navigate making changes with necessary tools, resources and support. I also stay connected with the greater community through my website, www.thisisdrfowler.com where I share coping strategies, general mental health information, and provide a way for others to reach out to me for speaking engagements, and other collaborative ventures.
We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I am a quintessential introvert by nature so luck may have paid a part in my making several of the networking connections that I have in the field. One thing I can truly say about Memphis is there is really no such thing as “six degrees of separation,” so that has definitely worked in my favor.
