Today we’d like to introduce you to Gaye Swan.
Hi Gaye, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After graduating from Mississippi State University, I began my career in marketing, advertising, and communications. I loved working in — and learning about — the field. In 1995, I became a mother of twins and with my husband’s support decided to take a “short break” to focus on my new little family.
The short break was extended, but I soon realized a needed a creative outlet. I started freelancing by taking a job here and a job there, and before I knew it, more than 20 years had passed and I’d built up a client base for writing jobs.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
My biggest challenge has been promoting myself. I love to give others the recognition they deserve but struggle with putting myself out there. My second largest obstacle was time management. When you work from home, it’s easy to get distracted by the things that need doing around the home.
Plus, the kitchen is right there! No need to schedule a break; you just get up and go snack.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a creative copywriter, working on a freelance basis. I most enjoy talking with people and turning their stories into compelling articles. As a big foodie, I appreciate the opportunity to work on articles about our city’s restaurant and food scene. I’ve been told by interviewees that they feel very comfortable speaking with me — that they feel like they are just chatting with a new friend.
I think I’m most proud of that, and it may set me apart as well. However, I really enjoy writing about almost anything! I’ve worked on websites for lawyers and contractors, brochures for plumbing supply, and blogs for church.
Any big plans?
I’m a Southern girl! My plans for the future are to reach out to larger magazines like Southern Living and Garden & Gun, and expand my profile and hone my skills. I’ve made an attempt at travel blogging; I’d like to do more of that and build an audience just for me.
