Rising Stars: Meet Grace Gravatt of East Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Grace Gravatt.

Grace Gravatt

Hi Grace, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My friend, Hadassa, and I both have a large interest in zines, which are self-published magazines. We also are always excited to see new art around Memphis, but noticed that there are not a lot of places to find new flourishing artists on the scene. We decided it would be a good idea to start a self published magazine where we could build connections and show off the work of emerging artists like us. We reached out to our friends and peers at the University of Memphis to help us make posters to spread the word about the magazine and help hand them out around town. Before we knew it, a team was gathered together and work from Memphis artists was submitted. Currently, we are working hard to organize the submissions and page formats. We are hoping to release the first issue in early May of this year, 2025.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
A huge struggle has been trying to organize a magazine while also being two college students organizing a separate show for our Senior Thesis. We also have never done something like this before and there has been a learning curve with some of the technology.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Grace Gravatt is an interdisciplinary artist using soft sculpture, printmaking, and installation techniques to create otherworldly, interactive spaces. Gravatt will have a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Memphis as of 2025. They also are a co-founder of the self-published magazine, Scribbling Scribe, focused on the growing Memphis artist community.

Hadassa Cruz is a Mexican-American artist living in the south that experiments with textiles and performance work. Their work revolves around issues of their personal life along with their experience with intersectionality and immigration. They aim to bring awareness to the day to day life of an average immigrant. They do, however, enjoy knitting and crocheting in their free time and spending time with their cat.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
We are in the fine arts program at the University of Memphis and our professors are our mentors. This experience has also made networking possible, through the efforts of our professors, peers, and other established Memphis artists. It’s all about reaching out.
