Rising Stars: Meet Jaylon (DJ Kolossus) Moore

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaylon Moore.

Hi Jaylon, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started DJing as a hobby during the summer pandemic of 2020. I always had a love for music growing up. Especially being from Mississippi and spending a lot of time in the country with my grandmother listening to blues and R&B. (To WDIA 1070 AM Radio).

At the time, I began DJing, I was living in New Orleans, LA. It initially started as something to do to pass time while being stuck at home after work. After my wife and I started to invite a few people over to our house and I would practice and have small gatherings. Those small gatherings then turned into house parties for friends and family. That was the beginning of DJ Kolossus.

I then started to work in lounges, clubs, & doing private events. My name was growing because of word of mouth. I wanted to DJ any and everywhere that would have me. You name it. Birthdays, graduations, funerals, repasts, weddings, receptions, pop-up shops, Bourbon St., Brunches, day parties, Mardi Gras, and more. I was always open to everything and I never wanted to limit myself. I still move that way today.

After spending 6 years in New Orleans, my wife and I decided to move back home to take a break from the constant movement and pace of NOLA. Since being back in Memphis, my career has been going well! I’m currently working with my Cousin & Business Partner Andy Woods. We have started our weekly (Saturday) brunch and day party event called Popular Demand. It’s held at Jerry Lee Lewis in downtown Memphis on Beale St.

We definitely have much more in store for the city! You can catch me at one of the most popular lounges/nightclubs in Memphis, Life Lounge in East Memphis. I’m continuing to do events, public and private, for several different corporations and businesses throughout Memphis and the Mid-South area. I have recently entered into the music business where I’ve been not only DJ’ing, but writing and doing A&R work with artists.

As of late, I am exclusively working with another featured artist of yours Derrell Adams, also known as Legit 6. I am also working with my brother Aaron Nwakanma, also know as Big Chief out of Houston, TX. We are due to make some big noise from both camps and I personally enjoy working with them both!

All in all, I thank God for the journey thus far and I’m grateful for the opportunity that has presented itself that was once a hobby. I know there is more work needed to be done and I’m excited about my journey. The marathon continues, keep going!!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t necessarily say the road has been easy, at all.

There are serval life lessons that were learned along the way. I always try to learn from the good and bad that come with DJing. But in the end, I wouldn’t change a thing. I’ve enjoyed myself thus far.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I like to take pride in being a versatile DJ. I grew up around older people, grandparents, aunts/uncles, and great-grandparents. That afforded me the opportunity to have been exposed to music before my time from the 70s & 80s.

I personally listen to more R&B, oldies and pop classics versus listening to a lot hip hop/rap today. This shows in my DJ style and song selections. Also, starting my career in New Orleans which made me privy to their culture of brass bands and bounce music.

Having a strong listening background in music from several different eras and cultures has allowed me to DJ for many different crowds. I can make your WHOLE family dance and have a great time. From the new dance craved TikTok generation all the way up to your grandparents who used record players in their hay days.

That is what make DJ Kolossus!

The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
The 3 biggest lessons I learned from the pandemic were:

1. Cherish your time. I learned to not take time for granted in life because we don’t know when our last day on Earth will be. We must take advantage of the time we have with friends and family because it could easily come to an end at any moment.

2. Be adaptable. Whenever the unexpected happens be able to change with the times and control what you can control.

3. It could always be worse! Be thankful for your journey and trials because it could always be worse. People have lost their jobs, family members, homes & much more from the pandemic. So I try to not complain about the obstacles of life because it could always be worse.
