Today we’d like to introduce you to John Maguire.
Hi John, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
Facebook live was a brand new thing. A bunch of us were hanging out cooking and someone went live on Facebook and we just started talking BBQ.
So the Live went on my feed. I got to work Monday morning and guys asked me what that was all about? They didn’t understand it but they thought it was entertaining. That’s when the light went off.
Sorry, this was July of 2018.
I’d been listening to podcasts for a while and thought let’s do a bbq podcast. A friend of mine David Garofalo built a studio above his cigar store. He has the number one cigar podcast in the world. The Cigar Authority.
I talked to him about doing a podcast he loved the idea. On August 8, 2018, I did the first episode of the Pit Life BBQ Podcast with “Messy” Mike Massiglia and “Crawdaddy “ Chris Crawford. Over time life got in the way and Chris and Mike left the show. Mike started his own BBQ trailer. After that Greg “The BBQ Broker” DiGiorgio joined me about two years in.
About a month ago Greg left the show for his catering company. Now, I’m flying solo. The show must go on. The show has over 200 episodes and is closing in on the four-year anniversary mark this August. The Pit Life BBQ Podcast can be found live on Facebook every Tuesday at 5 pm eastern. YouTube and all podcast platforms.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Get comfortable talking on camera!!! That took some getting used to. In the infancy of the show come up with topics.
Then how do you book a guest? Would someone actually be willing to come on? What do guys from New England know about BBQ?
I just kept on chipping away at it and figured it all out.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My full-time job. I’ve been a mailman in Winchester, MA for the past 24 years.
Absolutely nothing to do with BBQ! BBQ is a passion for me. Cooking and providing for my family.
What do you think about luck?
I believe in hard work. You get out what you put in. Luck and bad luck can be right place right time. Right place wrong time.
