Today we’d like to introduce you to Maggie Bearden
Hi Maggie, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey 17 years ago as a makeup artist. I had modeled in my teen years and fell in love with the beauty industry. I started doing makeup for any and everything at the age of 19. I went to cosmetology school at 30 because I wanted to learn even more. I worked as a hairstylist for a few years after graduating school, but realized I wanted to do something different. I started doing freelance makeup work again and was a special fx artist, worked on campaigns for Nike, and was a makeup artist on season 3 of Young Rock on NBC. After completing filming, I started my tattoo apprenticeship at Magic Mirror Beauty Studio under my mentor and friend Emily Epperson. I learned the art of cosmetic tattooing, which has been my goal since I learned it existed. I have learned so much about the art of tattooing makeup over the past 2 years. I have loved every second.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. I have done multiple career changes in my life. Being self employed is a hard road. I worked 3 jobs to put myself through cosmetology school at 30. I have faced alot of uncertainty in trying to achieve my goals. I just keep doing the next right indicated actions and so far it has paid off. I truly believe struggling trying to achieve your dreams gives you a level of determination and grit you could never manufacture. You have to live through it. It’s truly a blessing and changes your outlook on life. My challenges and obstacles molded me into who I am.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a cosmetic tattoo artist, makeup and special effects artist, and tooth gem artist. I am a licensed tattoo artist and cosmetologist. I tattoo people’s makeup. Brows, eyeliner, lip blushing. I am a film and television makeup artist and have worked heavily in wedding and events for 17 years. I am also an SFX makeup artist. I turn people into zombies.
I am most proud of my tattoo and cosmetology licenses. Those took years of hard work to accomplish. Also very proud of the makeup for film and television I’ve done. Those are long projects and to see the final result is very satisfying.
I think what sets me apart from others is that I have worked in the beauty industry my entire life. 20 years at this point. From modeling at 15, to makeup and hair in my 20s and 30s tattooing in my mid 30s, I am extremely knowledgeable in all facets of the industry. I have a natural eye for beauty. I have amassed so many skills over the last 20 years that i think give me an advantage.
How do you define success?
Having a happy clientele. Giving people a confidence boost is my biggest goal. Knowing I have worked so hard to perfect my craft so that I can share that with others. The knowledge I have gained, the amazing people I’ve met along the way, that’s true success to me.
