Rising Stars: Meet Marquita Gipson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquita Gipson.

Hi Marquita, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Girls that Glitter Inc was founded in 2018. The story behind the vision to mentor girls came from my personal experiences in my childhood. Until age 7, my mother was a single mother of two. My mother was also a teen mom.

I can remember being involved in organizations like Girls Scouts, Cheer, Summer Camp, and other youth groups where women took the time to mentor my sister and I. Those women and organizations played a vital role in my upbringing. Community Service was also a thing my mother introduced me to at a young age. We learned how to give back to people and how to serve others.

As I approached my 30th birthday, I felt in my spirit to be give to young ladies what has been given to me. I wanted to aid in helping young ladies develop confidence, self-esteem, and experience self-love.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The past 4 years has been years of growth. I have certainly faced many many challenges trying to grow a Mentoring organization with no experience whatsoever.

I’ve constantly prayed for God to allow His will to be done and ensure that the mission and vision align with impacting the lives of young girls. While trying to push the mission and vision, I am also a Wife, Mother and have a demanding full-time professional career. There has been times, I’ve not felt confident or that I had enough resources to maintain the organization.

There are times, I allowed comparison or threats from larger organizations to stop me from moving forward. I began to ask for help, seek out guidance and research my way to success. Being consistent in the work of mentorship has allowed me to overcome obstacles.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Girls that Glitter Inc. is a mentor organization for girls ages 11-17. Our mission is to empower and teach girls to thrive shine and have self-love.

We want our young ladies to love themselves. We are known for our 5 pillars. Our 5 pillars are based on how mentoring relationships will empower, build self-confidence, develop leadership and relationship building, community involvement, and mentoring.

Due to the pandemic, we have been blessed to convert virtually with young ladies in the city and also in other States as well. I am most proud to know that we have fostered relationships and can see the work that we do has helped these young ladies to thrive and to shine.

The thing that sets us most apart from others is that we foster and display a no-competition zone. There are many other great mentoring organizations and opportunities for our girls to be impacted. We encourage our mentees to join and engage in positive organizations that will help aid them on their journey.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Ahh! This is a hard one! We are a pretty open book with our mentees and we also do not shy away from helping other like-minded organizations.
