Rising Stars: Meet Mary Claire Harlow of Collierville, TN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Claire Harlow.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I started this integrative pediatric practice not just as a nurse practitioner, but as a mom. A mom who’s walked through the highs and lows of raising a child with complex needs. My son is on the autism spectrum, and his diagnosis changed everything: our routines, our finances, our stress, and even where we chose to live. But more than that, it changed how I practice medicine.

Becoming his mother opened my eyes to the gaps in our system and the incredible strength of parents who are navigating those gaps every day. I started this practice because I believe deeply in whole-child, whole-family care. Families deserve more than quick visits and surface-level answers. They deserve to be seen, heard, and supported.

I bring my clinical knowledge, but I also bring my heart. I know what it feels like to sit on the other side full of questions, fears, and hope. You’re not alone on this journey. Whether you’re here for support with ADHD, picky eating, sensory challenges, or just want a more thoughtful, root-cause approach to your child’s health, my goal is to walk alongside you with compassion, respect, and care that truly listens.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Since opening, I’ve worked longer days and more sleepless nights than I ever did as a W-2 provider at a large children’s hospital. Every decision from clinical care to business strategy to rent and marketing has rested on my shoulders. It’s been exhausting, isolating at times, and humbling. But it’s also been the most meaningful work of my life.

I did this because I believe that families deserve more …more time, more answers, more connection, and more support. I want every parent who walks through my doors to know: you are not alone. I see you. I’ve been there. And I’m here to walk with you through it

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a pediatric nurse practitioner with a background in pediatric gastroenterology, which is where my clinical journey began. I started my career at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and later worked at Baptist Children’s Hospital, where I had the privilege of learning under some of the most talented pediatric gastroenterologists in the greater Memphis area. That foundation in GI has deeply shaped how I practice today especially in integrative primary care because so many childhood concerns tie back to the gut,… from feeding issues and constipation to inflammation and neurodevelopment.

Today, I specialize in integrative pediatrics, with a focus on children with chronic or complex needs including ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, picky eating, and immune or GI-related concerns. I take a whole-child, root-cause approach that blends functional medicine principles with evidence-based care.

What I’m most known for is my kind, calm demeanor and my ability to connect deeply with patients and parents. Strong interpersonal skills are at the heart of how I practice. I believe that trust, compassion, and being fully present in the room are just as important as clinical knowledge.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I believe integrative and functional pediatrics is at the beginning of a major shift not just as a niche approach, but as a necessary evolution of pediatric care. More families are asking deeper questions, seeking root-cause answers, and wanting to feel seen and heard in the process. Over the next five years, I think we’ll see significant growth in integrative pediatrics both in terms of patient demand and provider adoption.

I don’t think this growth will be without challenges. There’s still education needed for families, providers, and systems to help bridge the gap between conventional care and integrative approaches. But I do believe this model of care is the future. It puts the child’s whole health physical, emotional, nutritional, environmental at the center. And that’s what families are truly asking for.
