Today we’d like to introduce you to Nofar Abouharon.
Hi Nofar, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Ever since I was a little girl I was sure I would be part of the industry in the world of productions and acting. At every opportunity I would grab a camera and document, mimicking familiar actors. I was sure I was the next actress. I enlisted in the army and was a rookie commander in the Air Force. I studied acting for three years and started playing on the TV comedy channel.
We all know actors get roles by tape cast so I started working in behind-the-scenes productions. Stay in the industry, get to know people, and maybe find myself in the next acting role. I quickly realized I was a producer and I love where I am. I rolled from production to production. I started with TV: reality shows, children’s shows, and live broadcasts. I moved on to movies, series, and commercials. Four years ago, I set up with a partner and friend, a production company in South Africa to create international joint projects.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
On the one hand, I can say that the road was smooth but it’s really a matter of hard work and paying attention to details. Today, after almost 15 years in the industry and after growing and evolving from a production assistant and water girl to a production manager, from there to a “producer” I can say that this is a path that very much depends on our approach. I came to this world with the goal of getting to know, grow and discover things.
I switched from TV to film, to international commercials and productions and each production was different. In the people and the way of working, in the content and the customer, and even the audience that watched it. There are moments when we have to think every time about how we renew ourselves anew and it is really in the inner work that everyone does with their profession. My way as a producer and my way as a Nofar are different ways that have blended together.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
It is always very challenging to talk or write about yourself. The title is Nofar Abouharon video producer and content creator. But I like to run away from titles because it labels us too much. I see myself as a production woman, a team player in everything related to the creative process. I have the ability to look at a project from the perspective of a logistical practical producer and also someone who is connected to the world of acting and can understand the director’s thoughts or alternatively create on my own. I teach online production and in film and production schools.
So after a few good years in the industry in general and focusing for the last 5-6 years on TV and digital commercials, social networks, and international productions. Experience with the United States, Africa, East Asia, and Europe.
There are two things that make me proud:
1. When I finish production when everyone is happy:
An entire team that worked hard and got what it deserved,
The customer is satisfied with the final product
And an audience that gets excited and talks about it.
2. I have reached a stage in my professional life where I can also afford to take up volunteer projects and help nonprofits, students, and small companies start doing projects and expand awareness.
The only thing that can differentiate us from other people beyond professionalism, is attitude and self-work. I can only control my reactions. If I know I’m doing my job to the best of my ability, listening and learning, putting myself out of my comfort zone every now and then, daring to take projects and ask questions to evolve I know this approach will set me apart from other producers.
PS: I am also an excellent producer!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Today, the world of social networks is really strong in collaborations and networking: LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, and more. People should just dare and ask. Start sending resumes or writing messages to people: “Hey, I’m looking for a job and I want to start something I’ve never done but I’m with the energy to work and work hard until I succeed and learn.”
Anyone who does not take you and teach you after such a message is missing out. So do not be ashamed and just dare otherwise you will miss. Just contact anyone who seems to you, because you already have a “no”, in the best case the “yes” will also come.
