Today we’d like to introduce you to Roshell “Roxy” Jefferson.
Hi Roshell, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My first love for hair began at a very young age in my hometown of Los Angeles, CA. Some of my first memories were of handing my mom rollers as she serviced her clients at the kitchen table. Unbeknownst to me at the time I was gaining the knowledge and a love for what would eventually become my passion and profession.
I relocated to Memphis, TN, and attended TREZEVANT CAREER AND TECHNOLOGY CENTER, which has a cosmetologist program. When I graduated high school, I was a licensed Cosmetologist and had the knowledge, drive, and passion to embark on a successful career.
I connected with a family who owns a salon, and once I stepped foot into this industry I dominated with creativity and style that made me stand out amongst my peers. With 20 years of hard work and determination in this industry, I have been afforded some great opportunities.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey has not always been easy. The greatest challenge of entrepreneurship is obedience. “Fear God and Obey his commands for this is everyone’s duty.” (Ecclesiastes 12:13). YES, we should all be obedient and disciplined, but I have learned this comes with practice.
As an entrepreneur, you are required to be on a different level of Obedience. Managing finances, time management, and prioritization are skills I thrive on a daily basis.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Cosmetologist who loves to create in all areas, whether it be clothes, food, travel, fashion, and of course, HAIR! My specialties are hair extensions, hair replacement, custom wigs, and natural hair care.
The 2 things I hear most from my clients are that I give the best shampoo, scalp massages and have installed some of the most natural-looking hair extensions. I also love intricate braid styles, sophisticated updos, and healthy hair.
I’m most proud of my longevity and my ability to reinvent myself to accommodate styles and trends. What sets me apart from my peers is my work ethic, my creativity, and last but not least, my awesome personality.
What matters most to you? Why?
My legacy is most important to me.
As the story of my legacy is still being written, I have never been afraid to go against the grain and be bold. My next bold move will change the salon experience for the city of Memphis. I love being creative and a trendsetter.
