Today we’d like to introduce you to Serreta Boson.
Serreta, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My business started when life handed me a bag full of LEMONS! But I am grateful today to say…. I made pickles. I know that sounds funny but it is so true. I had to have brain surgery in 2016 and was told I would never work again. I was devastated.
In my Dad, Sarge Boson, I said come home and I will teach you how to make the pickles. And my life has not been the same. I am now the FOUNDER/CEO of Sarge’s Famous Pickles Co., LLC. It is so exciting and moving back home to Arkansas has been a HUGE BLESSING.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a crazy road to get here. I am really transparent… so I did not have good credit. I was trying desperately to repair it and wait for the bankruptcy to fall off… so I could not just walk into a bank with my business plan and ask for a loan; I had to make this happen. My Dad believed in me and the company and we put every dime into it.
Then I had to learn about being a financially sound company. With God on my side and some really knowledgeable and great people… I am on my way. So the FINANCIAL HEALTH of my company has been the hardest struggle. I am pretty good at MARKETING and SALES. I need capital to scale and that has been very hard.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am your PICKLE LADY!!
Canning is a lost art in the African American community and I would like to see that come back. My Mom and Mama Callie would always can fresh vegetables and fruit to have for winter months. Once Dad taught me his pickle recipe it woke up the CANNER in me.
Now in order to can… you got to have FRESH VEGETABLES AND FRUIT. So….. I started farming. I AM NOW THE OWNER OF SFP FARMS back in my hometown of Benton, AR. So yes…… it’s me YOUR FARM CHIC.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the pop-ups but also love how we as a community are coming back to life again and working together to build.
