Rising Stars: Meet Teresa Hall-Franklin of Germantown, Tn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Teresa Hall-Franklin.

Hi Teresa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As the youngest child in a blended family, I learned early on the value of listening — a trait that would later become the foundation of my life’s work. Growing up, I envisioned myself as a career woman, following the traditional path of success that I believed would make my mother proud. I once imagined becoming a lawyer, a medical doctor, or even a judge. But after completing internships with Nia Therapy Services and The Exchange Club Family Center, my true calling became clear: helping others heal through understanding and compassion.

In 2002, I began my career in the mental health field as a Certified Anger Management Facilitator, specializing in adolescents and adults. I received professional training from Anderson and Anderson Anger Management in California—the technical consultants for the film Anger Management starring Adam Sandler—and later appeared as an Anger Management Consultant on the reality TV show Wife Swap in 2006. Over the past 23 years, I’ve facilitated countless individual and group therapy sessions, and today, my focus has expanded toward research as I pursue a Doctorate in Behavioral Health. My dissertation, The Experiences of Non-Metastatic Breast Cancer Survivors in a Gratis Hybrid Group Therapy on Anxiety: A Study Facilitated by a Breast Cancer Survivor Psychotherapist, reflects both my professional expertise and personal journey.

That journey took an unexpected turn in December 2020, when I discovered a lump under my left arm. The following month, I was diagnosed with HER2-positive, Stage 2B breast cancer. With no family history of the disease, the news was shocking. Yet, amid the fear, I felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude — gratitude that the cancer had been caught early enough for successful treatment, and that I had access to remarkable physicians, a loving family, and an incredible network of friends and fellow survivors.

Once my treatment and surgeries were complete, I knew I had to pay it forward. In January 2022, I launched a free hybrid mental health cancer support group, offering survivors a space to process their emotions, connect with others, and rebuild their sense of hope. It remains one of the most rewarding experiences of my life — certainly in the top ten.

Looking ahead, my goal after graduation is to open an integrated behavioral wellness clinic by 2026, continuing the mission that has defined every step of my journey: helping others heal — body, mind, and spirit — through compassion, science, and connection.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What I’m most proud of is my relatable, nonjudgmental approach with clients. I want every person who walks through my door to feel comfortable, cared for, and safe. Sharing one’s deepest experiences with a stranger is among the bravest things anyone can do, and I never take that vulnerability for granted. My clients know that I acknowledge and deeply respect the trust they place in me. More than anything, I genuinely want each of them to succeed in their goals and to see their best selves fulfilled — whatever brought them to therapy in the first place.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
