Today we’d like to introduce you to Trees Tarantino.
Hi Trees, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I started from a young age playing drums and guitar. I was in the school band from middle school all the way until I graduated, playing snare drum in the Marching Band and drumset in the Jazz band. I was a drummer in bands for a while but always had an affinity for songwriting, so I was naturally drawn to hip-hop and writing verses and developed my flow and wordplay along the way.
My pops plays guitar and he was my main inspiration from childhood. He would always have music playing and he played guitar himself, so instruments of all kinds were always within reach and I gravitated towards music as a form of self-expression from a very young age. I credit both my mom and pops for fostering creativity and encouraging me to play music.
When I graduated high school, my longtime band, FREED., split and I went full-time with rapping and producing. I credit Sánkgofi Jones aka Spek (Was Here) for supporting me in my early career and believing in my vision before I had the skills and resources to help with everything myself. He engineered my first 3 albums and is still a close and trusted collaborator to this day.
He we are now in the present-day and I can honestly say, I’m proud of my accomplishments and those of my peers as well. I’ve been so very blessed and able to create many diverse works of art in a multitude of forms, albums, singles, short films, EPs, videos , etc. and now I’m armed with experience, but still have that hunger, that desire to learn & grow, to be the best me I can be. I’m excited for wherever my journey leads me.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Sure it’s been smooth at times, but it’s also been many struggles and lessons along the way too. I’ve been on tour, I’ve performed for thousands of people in a packed out venue, I’ve experienced extreme media attention… and I’ve also played at a venue with literally 2 people at the show and seen the lows of doing this artist thing too. It’s about the people, the experiences and the love. It’s been a rollercoaster, and I wouldn’t change anything. This past year, I’ve rediscovered my “why?”, as in why do I even do this music thing? Why I do continue to be an artist and work on music all these years later?
The answer? I love this sh*t. I love the game. It’s not about money, it’s not about fame, it’s not about validation or respect from any other person, it’s about making dope shit because that’s what I love to do. I want to win too, but my core values of being genuine mean everything else will fall into place as it should. And if not? I’ll be an 80-year-old Grandpa still telling people to check out my mixtape, haha.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I create music & art. I’m a rapper, producer, singer, songwriter, entertainer, recording engineer, multi-instrumentalist, writer, filmmaker, director, actor, and graphic designer. But above all, I am creative and I love to create. Most who know me, or know of me, know that I’m deeply passionate about making music, rapping, singing, and songwriting.
I work on consistently having a range of different, unique flows and cadences to deliver my words with. That’s usually what many remember and know of me for, my flows. Lately, I’ve been producing, and making a ton of beats and I’m really enjoying it, it helps my mind expand in new ways and take different approaches to writing.
Right now, my latest EP ‘prime•cutz’ produced by Burnie Amsterdam, is what I’m proud of, I consider it my best work yet. Moreover, to be honest, I don’t care about setting myself apart from others, I am 1 of 1. I just love creating dope art and collaborating. I’m riding in my own lane and vibing in my own world and being unapologetic with my creativity.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Winning the Singleton Summer Camp Dodgeball Tournament 3 years in a row.
Our names are still engraved on the walls at that place. Good times. I still got a cannon for an arm too, haha. I want to do a Memphis music artists dodgeball tournament, who’s in? Lol.
