Rising Stars: Meet Tutweezy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tutweezy.

Darius Tutwiler

Hi, Tutweezy. I am so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been the funny guy or the class clown all my life. Once I graduated in 2012 from Manassas High School in North Memphis, I attended the University of Memphis. I found a love for acting/comedy in an improv class, even though my career plan was to do Architecture. I dropped out after two semesters, feeling unfulfilled in my major. At this moment, while sleeping on friends’ couches who believed in me, I started making comedy skits and doing standup comedy around late 2013. 2014, I had my first couple of checking videos begin to gain traction as my followers grew. 2016, I had my first true viral moment after consistently making content and collapsing with other up-and-coming creators in the city. Once my “blind date” Vine went viral, I had the proof I needed that I had found my purpose. I just kept filming and growing with like-minded people. In late 2018, I moved to Los Angeles to expand my career since, at the time, Memphis didn’t have the resources to learn and grow in my field. Social media was barely respected as an actual career at this time.

Let’s dig deeper into the story – has it been an easy path, and if not, what challenges have you overcome?
It has been the opposite of smooth. The road to success is paved with potholes and dead ends. I’ve lost friends and had family question my decisions with my life after dropping out to pursue comedy. Not everybody makes it, but I had to shut out everyone and everything that I felt didn’t align with my purpose. Everything I didn’t have, though, I eventually figured out how to get with being consistent and resilient. I had people push me away or call me crazy, but as soon as I figured it out, they were amazed and suddenly supportive. I learned that’s how it goes, though, when you have dreams bigger than some people can even comprehend within their own lives. They never heard of someone doing what I had done, so I couldn’t expect everyone to agree. If you believe in something and work as hard as you can to attain it, there’s no way you won’t eventually get it, and no one can stop you but yourself.

Thanks for sharing that. Please tell us more about your work.
I am a true multi-hyphenate. I love and am good at many forms of art. I can draw, sing, rap, act, stand up, and even dance! I am known for my checking/roasting abilities, putting myself in movie scenes using a green screen and editing, my Hood SpongeBob series, and my Comedy/Parody songs. I am the most proud of my ability to be versatile and adapt to anything thrown my way. That is what also sets me apart from others.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I’ve learned that I should always be willing to adapt and change the way of the world if I want to sustain myself.
