Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Kemp.
Hi Whitney, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My company, The Glam Gatzby LLC, has not always been recognized by that name. The company is a sign of my personal growth. The birth of this company shortly followed the birth of my daughter. I fell into a deep depression in 2010, right after my daughter was born. I took a break from college for about two years and just was not in a great place mentally or physically.
One night, I had a conversation with God, and it was one that I would never forget. I asked HIM, “What can I do to make money?” He revealed my gifts to me that night. My advice to anyone seeking counsel about your passions is to go to God! God has the answers if you ask. You may not get them when you want, but the answer will always be on time!
Eventually, I got back into school. I graduated from Shelton State Community College, Stillman College, and Syracuse University. I worked some jobs and resigned from some, but I kept going. After quitting a career that I thought I was good at but tried to double back and work. One of my former supervisors once told me, “Find something you are passionate about.” I thought she was rude, but I understand now. It all makes sense! Do not invest your time into anything that you are not passionate about. It will not last.
After years of school and life experience, it all came together. For the longest time, I thought I was doing a whole bunch of nothing, but that was not the case. I was able to take my styling experience and combine it with my social media advertising to grow my brand.
If you are familiar with The Great Gatsby by Scott Fitzgerald, you may be able to relate a little more. The story takes place during the great depression. The birth of The Glam Gatzby was born during the great depression, but so many beautiful aspects came from it. There are a lot of other similarities, but it is too much to name.
The Glam Gatzby is not just a service or product. The Glam Gatzby is an experience!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road was not smooth. The company has grown along with me. It is a testimony to how life’s changes can force you to go towards your destiny. I have styled hair, models, and hosted events. I faced the reality of having to close a storefront and taking a break from everything due to exhaustion.
At times, I was not my best friend but more of an enemy to myself. I did not eat well nor take care of myself as I should. Not to mention, my thoughts were clouded by superficial wants and what I saw on social media.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I like to consider what I do as art. The art of styling and creating new looks. I am known for hairstyling, celebrity-inspired thrift store styling hauls, and social media marketing. One moment that will always be unforgettable was when I started becoming a paid influencer for one of my favorite companies.
Any big plans?
I look forward to getting my social media marketing classes up and running. I want to share my expertise with others, so they can be successful in promoting their brands.
