Rising Stars: Meet Son.person

Today we’d like to introduce you to Son.person.

Hi Son.person, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
So bear with me, it’s gonna get pretty lengthy, but hopefully worth the read. I’ve had a love for music since I could practically speak. It’s something I’ve always found happiness in, and live music, the feeling that comes from putting on an amazing show, is something ecstatic that I hope to showcase to people all around the world, but I digress.

I was at House of Talent from age 5-7, moved to School Of Rock Memphis when I was 7 and have been there ever since. I always knew I wanted to be an entertainer in some fashion, but it wasn’t until an encounter with Tyler, The Creator and a trip to LA that really changed my perception.

I had arrived my first day before attending his annual Camp Flog Gnaw Music Fest. I was eating lunch when my mom thought she spotted some guys who we met a few hours prior in line to enter Tyler’s branded store, The Golf Store.

She wanted me to get their contact so I’d have someone else beside herself to be in touch with at the festival, as I was only 13 and in L.A. with only her. I ran out, and I didn’t see the guys I’d met earlier, but instead, it was Tyler and his friends walking down the street! I’d ran up to him, told him about the amount of influence I’ve received through his artistry, and asked him for a picture. He declined, but told me I could shake his hand. I did, and right as we were about to go separate ways, a random man had ran up, snapped a photo with him, and booked it. Tyler looked at me, said I had one chance, and let me get one too.

A day went by, the festival had begun and I made sure I was right on the railing for his set. During his set, he spoke about meeting someone that was in the crowd at that moment, saying they had creative ideas, and that that person “in 4-5 years” would “scare me and be my competition” and he knew that person because they shook hands.. He never said a name or characterized the person other than with how many years it’d be until he was his “competition”, but it was at that moment and ever since that I knew what I wanted to do.

I made my leave a few days later, landed back in Memphis, and instantly told Missy Shackelford and Landon Moore about my experience and what I wanted to do. I started writing music more consistently about 2 years ago and released my first song less than a year ago, alongside Landon. We made almost everything together, and Son.person would never be here if it wasn’t for his constant guidance and selfless support. My productive capability and determination are some factors that have led me to this point and what will continue to help me achieve the success I strive for.

At this point, I’m consistently gigging around my city, continuing to get involved with amazing people and organizations, such as Charlie Couvillion and FTK Memphis, and continuing to perfect my craft in both songwriting and the music industry.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Hell nooooo, far from it! When they call this industry a “hustle” they mean it literally. You cannot stop for a second, and there’s always something new to learn. It’s still something I love. It might not be easy, but the satisfaction from it all is so so worth it!

I’ve had my fair share of “this is it” moments. I’ve made plenty of mistakes, and I’m far from perfect. I’ve had times where I felt like I put my all into a song or show, and then nothing comes from it. But hey, failure’s just a part of the process! You gotta have touch skin and realize things don’t come quick and easy in this industry. Thomas Edison failed 1000 times before perfecting the lightbulb. Whenever the road gets bumpy, I just tell myself “hey, haven’t hit 1000 yet. Might as well keep going even harder.”

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a Pop/Hip-Hop artist from Memphis, TN who started releasing music on Dec. 18th, 2020. I always had the worst time categorizing my sound. There are so many different genres and styles of music I incorporate that I just couldn’t come to a good conclusion. After some progression in my writing, I’ve noticed that the catchy hooks and infectious melodies that I love create have always been a strong suit of mine! It’s funny too because at first, I always tried to avoid being too “generic” or “basic”. Yet, when I let the simplicity flow, I find myself putting together some of my favorite works! I’m proud of all I’ve accomplished at my age but am far from satisfied. I think that may be what sets me apart from the rest honestly. It can be a double-edged sword in that, many times I feel disappointed with myself and the amount of work I put in, but it can also be beneficial in knowing I’ll never feel “perfect” and always seek improvement.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I’ll be honest books were never really my favorite. It sucks that for many people my age, it’s hard to stay engaged in a good book, but what’re you gonna do. 2 that I would definitely recommend though if you’ve got the time are “Beyond Good and Evil” and “The Intelligent Investor”.

As for apps, Canva is literally my best friend. I wish they would sponsor me, I love them so much. It’s definitely a learning experience and something I’ll inevitably grow from, but the support that it provides to make your marketing and graphic design skills more proficient is amazing. Oh and the BMN app. If you don’t know, BMN stands for the Brandman Network. It’s a great community of artists, producers, A&Rs, brand developers, and much more that has pushed my artistry and brand awareness to the next level, with it’s great courses on just about anything and everything you need to understand about the music industry as well as being an instant response outlet for getting answers to just about any music, marketing, or business question you may have. Let alone, it being a great networking platform as well.

Podcasts aren’t huge for myself, but I gotta compliment Spotify for really stepping up their game in that right. Always love to listen in on “Dissect” when I get a chance.
