Justin Wise shared their story and experiences with us recently and you can find our conversation below.
Justin, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What is something outside of work that is bringing you joy lately?
Well… I just finished restoring my first car that I had when I turned 16 which was a 1976 Plymouth Roadrunner. It was my dad’s first car and then became mine when I started driving. I tore it down some years back to restore it and finally got it back on the road this summer. So I have really enjoyed cruising around in it on the weekends.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Sure! So my name is Justin and I own Wise Guy’s Detailing here in Memphis. I started the business approximately 9 years ago. We offer both mobile and in shop auto detailing. Everything from basic interior details to high end paint correction and ceramic coatings. We work with other great local companies as well to offer window tint, PPF, vinyl wrap, and other vehicle protection/customization options.
Appreciate your sharing that. Let’s talk about your life, growing up and some of topics and learnings around that. Who taught you the most about work?
My dad for sure. He has always had a great work ethic. Very rarely would he miss a day of work. Unless he was just too sick or there was an emergency he was always up and at work early in the morning. And then on the weekends he would be working around the house or getting other stuff that needed done accomplished. I always respected that and definitely got that from him!
If you could say one kind thing to your younger self, what would it be?
Go for it!
I’ve never been a risk taker. Taking the leap to start my business took so many pushes. There’s never a perfect time to start and I kept putting it off. I wish I would have taken the leap sooner!
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
Oh there’s so many.
You have to do certain things certain ways.
You have to be certified.
You have to know everything day 1
I think it has gotten better but there used to be a lot of comparison between detailing professionals and social media makes things worse. You would feel like if you didn’t use a certain product, or have the best tools, or have the best skills, that you shouldn’t be in the industry.
But everyone has to start somewhere. And we get better, over time. Comparing yourself to others will many times leave you feeling inadequate.
Okay, so before we go, let’s tackle one more area. If you retired tomorrow, what would your customers miss most?
I hope it’s the way they feel anytime we have an interaction. I love the relationship I have gotten to build with many of clients over the years.
I’m a Detailer and ofcourse I want to do a great job on every vehicle.
But I also want them to feel excited and happy to do business with me.
I want the experience to be one that they look forward too. One that makes a week just a little better. And that they leave with a clean car and a smile on their face!
