Tavia Rodgers of Memphis on Life, Lessons & Legacy

We recently had the chance to connect with Tavia Rodgers and have shared our conversation below.

Tavia, we’re thrilled to have you with us today. Before we jump into your intro and the heart of the interview, let’s start with a bit of an ice breaker: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
With the recent loss of my mother, I’ve been forced into a chapter I never imagined I’d face so soon. I am being called to walk in faith like never before: to navigate life without the comfort of her wisdom, the strength of her support, and the warmth of her advice. This journey has stripped away distractions and made everything deeply spiritual for me. Every choice I make now is about aligning with God’s direction, honoring her legacy, and living in a way that makes her proud. Faith is not easy, it’s stepping into the unknown with no guarantee except God’s promise. And right now, I am choosing to trust Him completely, even when the path ahead feels uncertain.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
I’m the proud owner of Fitsique Athletix. I earned my personal training certification in 2021, during the second year of the COVID pandemic. At the time, I had just completed my master’s degree and moved back home, but like so many others, I found job hunting to be incredibly challenging. That season of uncertainty pushed me to reflect on what I truly loved—and that’s when I decided to pursue certification in something that had always been close to my heart: fitness.

It turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Fitness gave me a way to connect with people from all walks of life, share my skills, and grow my business one client at a time. What makes Fitsique Athletix unique is the passion behind it—I’m driven to help people become their best selves, inside and out. There’s nothing more rewarding than watching someone go from feeling uncomfortable in their own skin to radiating confidence because they committed to the process.

In addition to personal training, I also sell athletic apparel designed to fit and flatter different body types. My vision for the future is to open my own facility, a space dedicated to helping people lose weight, maintain their fitness goals, and excel athletically. Whether it’s the everyday individual striving for better health or an athlete preparing for peak performance, my mission is to provide the tools, guidance, and encouragement they need to succeed.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What did you believe about yourself as a child that you no longer believe?
As a child, I believed life had to follow a strict script: the one I saw on TV or heard about growing up. You go to school, earn your degree, get a job, get married, have a family and all by a certain age. I thought that was the only way to “do life right.”

But life had other plans for me, and I’m grateful it did. I’ve learned that life isn’t a checklist, it’s a journey. It’s full of detours, lessons, heartbreaks, and unexpected new beginnings. Sometimes you have to start from scratch, not once, but over and over again. And that’s not failure, it’s resilience.

Now, I believe that you can create a beautiful, meaningful life on your own terms. You can pursue dreams at any age, rewrite your story as many times as you need, and still arrive exactly where you’re meant to be.

What did suffering teach you that success never could?

Suffering has taught me lessons that success never could. Losing my mother showed me a depth of pain I didn’t know existed, but it also revealed a strength I didn’t know I had. It taught me patience with myself, compassion for others, and the importance of cherishing every moment. Suffering forces you to slow down, to reflect, and to see what truly matters. Success feels good, but it doesn’t shape you the way pain does. Suffering transforms you. It deepens your faith, sharpens your gratitude, and reminds you that even in brokenness, you can still grow. Success can celebrate who you are, but suffering shapes who you become.

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What are the biggest lies your industry tells itself?
One of the biggest lies the fitness industry tells itself and the public is that results have to look a certain way and happen in a short period of time. The industry thrives on “quick fixes,” unrealistic body standards, and one-size-fits-all programs that don’t account for real life, real bodies, and real struggles. Another lie is that your worth is tied to how you look. Fitness is about so much more than aesthetics it’s about health, longevity, confidence, and mental well-being. The truth is, there’s no magic pill, no secret formula. Consistency, patience, and a plan that works for your lifestyle will always win over gimmicks and fads.

Okay, so let’s keep going with one more question that means a lot to us: Could you give everything your best, even if no one ever praised you for it?
I’ve learned that giving your best isn’t about recognition it’s about integrity and how you show up for yourself. A special mentor in my life always told me, “How you do one thing is how you do all things,” and that has stuck with me ever since. Whether it’s training a client, making a tough decision, or working toward a personal goal, I strive to put in my best effort every single time, even if no one is watching or praising me. Over time, that consistency builds character, credibility, and results that speak for themselves. Doing your best, even in silence, sets a standard for your own life and creates momentum for the opportunities, relationships, and success that will come later.
