Today we’d like to introduce you to Kara Jamison
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My sourdough journey started after much trial and error making sourdough for my family. We have two sons that are in competitive sports where nutrition is key!
After months of not being able to find a clean, healthy bread at the grocery store, I thought why not try and make it myself! I have always loved to cook but, baking hasn’t always been my favorite thing due to following a recipe precisely. When I cook, I can add a little of this and a little of that whereas, again baking is precise measurements, so it’s been a beautiful challenge along the way! After some trial and error, I became sourdough obsessed and knew I could never go back to processed bread.
I knew other people had to feel the same frustration! Given my many years and longtime love of hosting and entertaining I thought why can’t I put these two things together. That’s when Knead to Rise became a reality. I knew there would be some interest but, had no idea it would blow up like it has. I have enjoyed meeting new people and loved that I can teach them how to make a healthy bread for their families and friends.
My classes are 2 hours, and in my home. During my class you will learn and practice the basics of sourdough. You will learn how to make a sourdough loaf, my process of feeding and keeping an active starter. Each person takes home a jar of established starter and a ball of dough to bake at home.
It’s been a blessing to combine my love for the kitchen, hosting, but now, adding in the aspect of an activity really just brings it all too life!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Fortunately, there haven’t been too many struggles other than adapting to the rapid pace this has grown! My friend Lauren, that’s been handling my social media from the start told me “I’m telling you now, this is going to blow up quickly.” I thought to myself “yea right” and boy was she right!
I’m so humbled by all of it! My friends and family have been the biggest blessing of all in this, with constant support and genuine excitement.
I think the last piece that hasn’t necessarily been a “struggle,” but an unfamiliar aspect is the attention. I’ve always been a very accommodating individual which always prompts me wanting everyone to feel comfortable and taken care of! I had a leader a long time ago tell me “Always leave people better than you found them.” And that’s something that has always stuck with me!
With all that being said, my goal is to leave people feeling good about themselves and ultimately, fulfilled when they leave my classes!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Before Knead to Rise became a full-time reality, I spent 20 years in sales. Everything from, staffing, building a portfolio and fundraising. Currently, Knead to Rise, by the grace of God, has become 24/7 and I wouldn’t change a thing. I think most people who know me well would say I’m known for being a hype girl! I genuinely love seeing others thrive. I’ve always tried to practice what I preach and that is a culmination of having fun, entertaining and most importantly, being inclusive.
I’m most proud of my family, they are an integral part of my daily support and love. But also, I’m proud of myself, for the resilience I’ve cultivated over the years and the ability to pivot when necessary. The famous phrase “when life throws you lemons…” is easier said than done, but that’s what we’re doing over here, making lemonade!
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
My hopes are to continue building a brand I’m proud of while also bringing our community back to the roots of making bread. The goal is always to expand on what sourdough looks like, meaning the opportunities to combine everyday food with sourdough is endless!
