Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiny Starks.
Hi Destiny, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a child, I started out doing my granddad’s hair and as I got older, I became independent and knew what I like and didn’t like. So I started practicing my hair myself. As well as cutting my own bangs and curling my hair under the age of 13. Yes, 13.
Then I had a little sister who’s 5 years younger than me, so I’d practice braiding styles on her. My mom noticed how good I was at such a young age. She started making me do my little sister’s hair quite often. I was inspired by the beauty industry in so many ways and learned new styles.
Then followed that I grew up seeing my mom do her makeup and lashes. I instantly fell in love with makeup. I took a professional makeup class by Rashida “The Glam Doctor” in Michigan in 2017. Followed the class I got to be a part of so many opportunities doing hair and makeup.
Such as the NACW FORD Women’s Expo, Fashion Shows, Weddings, Photoshoots, etc. Also, I can’t leave out my favorite experience, In 2020, I got to go on Oprah’s 2020 Vision Tour with Weight Watchers as a Beauty Specialist.
I worked with brands such as Love, Beauty and Planet, Vaseline, Degree, Weight Watchers, Shea Moisture, and more. It was a time to remember, forever grateful for that opportunity, I am looking forward to my new adventures and opportunities to come.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Some days, you have a consistent business, some days you don’t. Also, you can get unmotivated to keep going but you can’t give it.
Also in my life, I have moved around a lot, so quite often I had to start over. Also when you are looking for work, you have to be okay with coming in contact with gatekeepers who don’t like to help or assist you when you are looking for work or putting out work.
You can’t be discouraged when no one wants the help when you are seeking it. I had this experience working in production on set for a TV show, and I asked about the makeup team to be a part of, the women I encountered didn’t want to share information with me and were rude.
But it’s okay, I will have my time. What’s meant for me will be.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As far as makeup, I specialize in skin makeup, I make your makeup look natural, clean, and like your skin.
I’m not into dramatic contour but I can do it. Also ironically most of my clientele love natural looks, so that works out. My dream is to be on set for more TV Makeup Work.
Then for hair, I specialize in natural hair, Locs, Crochet, Protective Styles, PressNCurl, ponytails, etc.
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
Keep God first. Be confident in what you do.
What’s for you will be for you. Love what you do and enjoy it. Your passion shouldn’t feel like a burden. Closed mouths don’t get fed.
Everyone won’t see your vision but it’s okay because you know and saw the vision, so that’s all that matters. When you hit obstacles, it’s okay to cry but don’t sit in that, wipe your tears and keep going.
