Today we’d like to introduce you to Gerry Rushe.
Hi Gerry, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I run a Wrestling and Entertainment Website and Podcast. I started out making wrestling memes on Twitter. Then bumped into an old work colleague who had set up a Wrestling Podcast, he invited me on and my wife, who is a massive Wrestling fan, soon joined.
We spent 2 years with WrestleSlam, and while we were there we were also building our own channel. During the pandemic we came up with a few ideas and our main goal was the put as much energy as we can into highlighting the Irish Wrestling independent scene. Eventually, we went out on our own and have been busy ever since.
As the Wrestling Industry is a very niche market and because the Entertainment side of our name suggests, we wanted to also focus on Movies, TV, and Live Events so we began another monthly Podcast, Top Of The Pods, we were joined by Tom Philpott from Pop Cult Pod and Phil Connolly from Deep Red Productions. We take the top 10 lists and break them down and make our own. This has been a lot of fun. We go back and watch movies or TV shows and decide which one tops our list. This a very unusual take on this Podcast.
About a year has passed since we began, we have added some new members to the IWE family, Colin Byrne, Niall Fox, and Mark O’Brien and we were fortunate enough to be asked to become commentators for a Brand new Wrestling promotion, Hard Knox Pro Wrestling, based in Limerick. This has been a dream come true for a couple of Wrestling fans and we have loved every moment of it.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has been a challenging time but very fun. Trying to grow a YouTube channel from scratch and get people to watch and subscribe is not an easy task. Thankfully we have a bigger social media presence with Twitter and TikTok and have been able to bring in subscribers from those avenues. We have also started making youtube shorts and have gained even more subscribers from this.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Outside of covering Wrestling and Entertainment, I am a full-time employee in the Irish Naval Dockyard, having previously spent 5 years as a serving member, I now work as a rigger/banks man and train to be a Crane Driver. Balancing work and life is a challenge as aside from working and podcasting I also edit everything myself and have been teaching myself how to edit.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Think learning how to balance work and life is one of the most important lessons anyone can master. Weekends are most important and other than once a month when we record Top Of The Pods, these days we prioritize life over anything. Making sure to have something to look forward to.
