Today we’d like to introduce you to Monica Sánchez.
Hi Monica, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Mexico. I moved to Memphis almost 26 years ago, like many people looking for a better work opportunity. I have always loved acting.
I studied theater in Mexico for three years and now I’m a part of the first bilingual theater group called Cazateatro in Memphis, TN. The theater has always been my passion. When my youngest daughter was one, I decide to be a clown for her birthday party. I didn’t think anything about it at that moment in a professional way.
It wasn’t until my oldest daughter was five, that I decided to be a clown again. With some help from a co-worker, we both needed some extra income and we decided to use my daughters’ birthday parties as a tryout with clown make-up, face painting, balloons games, and later magic tricks.
Some friends then start calling us for birthday parties and that’s how Burbujita la Payasita Bilingual was born.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I love to perform as a clown and work with kids. Kids are sincere if they like what you do they will tell you, if they don’t like it they will let you know in the crudest and most honest way.
So my struggle was to be ready, prepare myself to learn how to do face painting, make balloon animals, and do magic tricks for both children and adults. Having small kids was difficult at times, many times I did have to bring my kids to work with me.
When they got older, they didn’t want to come with me anymore.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Well, I’m a professional children’s entertainer A.K.A Clown, but I’m a bilingual clown because I speak both English & Spanish, that’s the beauty of my job. I specialize in keeping kids and parents entertained at parties, and not just birthday parties!
I also do baby showers, weddings, and bachelorette parties. Yep!!
All while in my clown outfit. What makes me proud of myself is when people recommend me to others and when they call me back almost every year to do parties, either for their kids or a family member.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
You have to love what you do, if you don’t JUST STOP, it’s not for you. If you like to work with kids, this is for you. Be prepared to answer the funniest and most strange questions from little kids.
