Daily Inspiration: Meet Spectra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Spectra

Hi Spectra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
About 15 years ago I sold everything I owned and moved to California for my singing career. I was working on that while doing gig work, promotional gigs for brands and events, stuff like that. While I was looking for new bookings I came across a job for karaoke host and thought, “this would be perfect! I can use my people skills and my singing skills together, I get to do what I love and do what I’m good at!” I started hosting karaoke about 13 years ago, within a year I bought my own equipment and went into business for myself, now I have a team of amazing talent and we do all sorts of events all over the Sacramento area.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s always a challenge finding new shows, building shows, keeping them going long term. My focus is always to be a benefit for the business, to bring in people and give them something to look forward to every week. Sometimes it’s not a good fit, sometimes they don’t want to pay, some people just hate karaoke! There’s a lot of competition in this area so it can be hard to find a new place without stepping on toes. There’s also the fact that you’re working in a bar. I’ve had to part ways with hosts due to alcohol problems. And dealing with angry drunk people can be really exhausting and sometimes dangerous. I’ve been screamed at, I’ve had people fall over and knock my equipment down, people dropping mics is a common one. You never know what to expect!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
First and foremost I’m an artist. I’ve been singing my whole life, I paint, draw, crochet, you name it, if you can create something, I want to create it. I’m best known for my music and entertainment business, we focus on karaoke, DJ and live music events but karaoke is our specialty. When we do karaoke it’s not just a mic and some singers, it’s an experience. We’ve got the lights, the energy, it’s about making you feel like a star for those moments you have that mic in your hand. I love performing and the feeling I get from it so I try to share that with everyone I encounter. Karaoke isn’t a job for me, it’s about community and connection through music. I take so much pride in the community I’ve grown to be apart of over the years, so many talented, wonderful people that I probably never would have met otherwise.

What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I’ve learned to just go for it. Fearlessness. I used to struggle with crippling stage fright and I meet people all of the time who still do. But I see them conquer that fear and I watch them grow and come out of their shell. It’s something I apply in my daily life with everything I do, just to for it, give it your best and keep going.
