Today we’d like to introduce you to The Agape Music Group.
Hello, The Agape Music Group; so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
John: The journey started for us, together, over 10yrs ago. When we were dating, we began with me covering production and Sequoya more on vocal producing and writing. But we’ve both been making music for a while; we were raised in very musical churches and households. We primarily worked with friends who needed help with their projects and just stayed in the background.
Sequoya: We came to a point where we felt like there was more God was asking us to do. But a lot of heart work had to be done in preparation for all that we really believed God required us to do. Individually, there were a lot of insecurities and fears that we had to work through. Together, as a couple, we had to learn to lean into what the heart of God towards us looks like, what it feels like, and what it sounds like to produce the sound that we believe God gave us truly.
John: So, as a result, that’s where our name came from, The Agape Music Group, because AGAPE is the unconditional love from the Father to us. It doesn’t change, it doesn’t waver, that love never fails, and we can rest in our confidence in His love.
Sequoya: So fast forward to 2020, top of the year in January, before the pandemic, we released our first song, The Wait, and also started a clothing line at the same time. And it has been an incredible, challenging, yet beautiful journey ever since.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Sequoya: Smooth? Lol, not so much. Because our sound isn’t the traditional “Gospel” sound, there were some challenges.
John: Yeah, we got a lot of feedback from various ones telling us we were dope and that they loved the sound, but they didn’t know exactly what to do with us. They didn’t know where we fit.
Sequoya: And honestly, we agreed with them. We weren’t exactly sure where we fit either. But we knew that our message was that of hope and inspiration, and the love of Christ. And we know that somebody somewhere needs the Gospel in the way unique way that God gave it to us.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Sequoya: we coined our sound Worship and 808s. Because we love worshiping God through our lyrics, music, and everything we say, sing, and do, We like it with many thumps!
John: For those of you that don’t know, 808s are that low, low, low bass that you hear that rattles your trunk when you turn it up loud.
Sequoya: Yep! And we are from the South, so it’s only right.
John: And even though we have our style, and it’s different, we acknowledge the importance of all the different styles and genres in Gospel music, specifically.
Sequoya: Yeah, we are big on collaboration and support of others who are also spreading this message of the love of God. So if you’re reading this and want a collab, hit us up!
John: Also, One of the things I’m most proud of, outside of the streams, all the accolades and winning awards, is the impact we’ve had on some of our peers and our children, specifically. Just hearing people be encouraged and inspired means so much.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Sequoya: Most people might not know that we are very particular about our tea and coffee. We have a full bar cart filled with coffees, loose-leaf teas, and espressos. Yeah, we get down, lol.
John: And many people might not know that Sequoya is a smooth 6 inches taller than me. Yes, I got myself a tall glass of water 😎 I was thirsty, LOL.
