My name is Mariama Diallo, and my journey into fashion began at a young age. I grew up watching my father in fashion merchandising, where he ran a small business called Diallo’s Dresses. Working alongside him in the shop gave me a first-hand understanding of the industry and sparked my passion for fashion. I learned the ins and outs of the business, from customer service to product curation, and it wasn’t long before I started thinking about how I could turn my love for fashion into something of my own.
After earning my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration at the University of Memphis, I decided it was time to take a risk and pursue my own path. I had always loved modest fashion, but as a Muslim girl born and raised in Tennessee, I found that there weren’t many options available that fit both my style and values. I saw a gap in the market and knew that I could create something meaningful not only for myself but for girls like me—girls who want to dress modestly and stylishly without compromising on affordability.
That’s how ModestybyMariama was born. I created this online brand to provide modest, elegant, and affordable fashion to women in my city and around the world. My goal is to empower Muslim women through clothing that makes them feel confident and comfortable, no matter where they are. Today, I’m proud to say that my brand is starting to make a difference, bringing more options to the modest fashion space and helping women express themselves while staying true to their beliefs.

In my journey as an entrepreneur, I’ve faced plenty of obstacles and challenges. Growing up in Tennessee, where options for modest fashion were limited, meant I had to create something entirely from scratch. Without a local network of brands or a thriving modest fashion scene, I had to figure things out on my own, navigating a lot of uncharted territory, which wasn’t easy.
Balancing my work at Diallo’s Dresses while building ModestybyMariama has been another challenge. It’s been just 10 months since I started my brand, so managing my time and energy between the family business and my own venture requires dedication and long hours. When I decided to take the leap after earning my degree, I felt a real fear of failure, stepping into the unknown with no guarantees, but with a deep belief in what I was doing.
As I work to scale my brand, there are new challenges like learning how to market online and connect with a global audience. Each step in growing ModestybyMariama comes with a learning curve, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to see the progress.
These obstacles have shaped both me and my brand. They’ve taught me resilience and adaptability, forcing me to stay determined even when things are tough. Though it’s only been 10 months, every challenge has made ModestybyMariama stronger, and I’m proud of how far it’s come.
