Life & Work with Dr. Jameice Decoster-edmunds of Downtown Memphis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jameice Decoster-edmunds

Hi Dr. Jameice, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began before I was 10 years old. I was always the fastest kid in my class, which led me to join a track team and from there truly began my journey to physical health and wellness. I went to a division 1 university on a full track scholarship and after I graduated, my commitment to health and wellness continued when I earned my master’s in public health and then went on to earn a doctorate in Clinical Psychology.

In addition to my career pursuits, my personal commitment to health and wellness, particularly for Black women, is exemplified through my FitMeice, LLC business. The main priority of my business is to encourage women to find ways to take care of their health both physical and mental. My motto of “Physically Strong Mentally Healthy” is something I try to live by and encourage others to do the same. Wellness to me is all encompassing including how we take care of ourselves from the neck down AND the neck up.

I wanted to be more than a personal trainer. I wanted to find another way to encourage, empower, and uplift Black women to take control of their mental and physical health. I never wanted to make it seem like I always had everything together, because I didn’t and don’t. There are times in my life where my career, my business, and my personal life are not in perfect balance, and I know that will happen at times. The important part is knowing it, bracing for it, and not expecting to give everything 100% all the time. It is important to embrace flexibility especially with someone like me who has a husband, a 6-month-old sweet baby boy, a career as a psychologist, and a business owner. It took time to get to this space and it’s something I have to be reminded of from time to time.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has absolutely not been a smooth road. One struggle I had with my business initially was finding balance. I knew I wanted to encourage women to be healthier, but I had no idea what I wanted that to look like and how to do that effectively. It is one thing to have an idea about what you want to do but it is another to figure out how to do it in a way that is not only in alignment with your core values but empowering to others.

At one point, my business took a backseat to other areas in my life. I am still working to have it look the way I want in this current season of my life. I often felt I had to have everything “together”. I needed to give all areas of my life 100% and I couldn’t let people down. Once I took a step back and analyzed the situation, I realized I wasn’t practicing what I was preaching. One of the very things I was promoting in my business, which was balance, was not something I’d been living by. I felt so overwhelmed, flustered, and incapable. I later took the time to understand why I was that way and once I did, I realized that I didn’t have to do all the things all the time. I now understand that is a lot easier said than done.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Currently, my business looks like creating e-books for gym and home workouts that have videos associated with them as well as a video of me reciting affirmations before each workout. Additionally, I sell resistance bands that come with workout affirmations to get you motivated not just for the gym but affirmations you can use in life. I also empower and uplift women through my social medias by posting videos of myself practicing what I preach in an effort to show Black woman how important it is to take care of themselves.

I am also a psychologist who works with people to help them achieve the best version of themselves, whatever that may look like. I see people with complex trauma, attachment challenges, severe mental illness depression, anxiety, etc. I love what I do and it is in complete alignment with who I am as a person and my business.
