Today we’d like to introduce you to Kevin Cheatham, Jr.
Hi Kevin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a Nashville native that traveled to Memphis in order to pursue my education and football dreams at the University of Memphis. While getting a degree in Business Administration with a minor in Hospitality & Resort Management.
I climbed my way up the corporate ladder with Hilton Headquarters, while also opening up my real estate consulting company Kev Buys Houses. Hilton was a great opportunity to network and grow but real estate was my real passion.
As I saw the industry shifting in corporate America and the real estate boom happening in Memphis. I wanted to be a resource in the real estate industry, while still being able to invest.
So after 7 years with Hilton Headquarters, I resigned and renamed my company Grindhouse Construction. I had acquired my contractor’s license and found a mentor to assist in the process. The best thing I have learned is that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel, you just have to make it better.
After meeting my mentor Sherman Brown who taught me roofing system installations, I knew I was onto something. The reason I focused on the roofing systems was due to no matter where you are in America, you must have a roof over your head.
In the 1st year on my own, I completed 50 roofs, and then I added more salesman to the team to provide more service to clients. In which then increased our 2nd year to 110 roofs completed, teamwork makes the dream work.
Roofing installations are now our specialty and we service over 250 homeowners and businesses each year.
Our growth has allowed our teams to provide world-class service in multiple markets such as Memphis, Nashville, Alabama, and Georgia. We are also vendors for State Farm, Allstate, the City of Memphis, and Memphis International Airport. Roofing installations have also allowed the company to expand into full renovations and custom projects.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t been smooth but it’s been a great journey so far. I believe every business owner has their ups and downs but it’s about how you respond to the situation.
Covid threw us for a loop due to several people having to be tested daily, while also ensuring that the client projects are being completed on time and correctly. Along with dealing with the workforce shortages, we are big on having the right teams in place to win.
So acquiring new team members was vital throughout our growth as we have entered multiple markets. Once we were able to navigate through those situations I have learned to trust the process and keep working.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Giving back is what I am all about.
I partner each year with a nonprofit entitled Couture Cares and we provide different community events to inspire the youth. Such as my conference One Brother to Another in which we discuss financial literacy, business, and life.
We also provide scholarships to graduating seniors throughout the mid-South area. I am also a Memphis of Kappa Alpha PSI Incorporated and 100 Black Men Memphis Chapter.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
I am always open to building new business relationships and have several platforms to connect with.
