Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Varvak.
Hi Amanda, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
About a year into the pandemic and quarantine, I have gone through a few new hobbies but wanted to create something with my hands and connect with my local community. I saw really unique candles online but have not seen them being sold locally, so I decided to try my hand at them.
I started collecting the materials I needed and experimenting with formulas to get just the right balance. I set up an online shop and started looking into local markets and stores to sell my candles at and the rest is history.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has definitely not been a smooth and linear journey. The first hurdle was figuring out the right formula for my candles. The combination of wax, fragrance, dye, and wick size is very important for a great candle. The next hurdle was supply chain issues. Many materials were always being sold out due to high demand and low supply.
Lastly, I’ve had a few injuries/ health issues that would make having the markets a bit more challenging. Even with all of these obstacles, I learn a ton and I’m always having fun on this journey.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
When I’m not making candles, I work a 9-5 as an IT project manager for FedEx Services. My day-to-day includes resolving impediments, so tasks can be accomplished successfully and on time and ensuring team members have all the necessary tools to complete tasks.
I am also a liaison between management and developers to guarantee customers’ needs are met and I communicate the team’s accomplishments to the organization.
I am most proud of my ability to be reliable and goal-oriented. I set goals for myself and create reasonable steps to accomplish them and make sure that my team can always rely on me to get things done.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Do not be afraid to ask for help or advice. There are so many resources at your fingertips, you just have to put yourself out there.
