Today we’d like to introduce you to Candice Todd.
Hi Candice, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my wig making business a little over years ago after becoming pregnant with my son. As a child, I always had an interest in hair. My two best friends would always let me practice different styles on their hair. When I was younger, I was also bullied because my hair was shorter than the other girls at school. I would wear braids and twist in order to try to fit in. As I grew older, my hair got longer but I still had a love for hair extensions.
I started making wigs in college and for a long time I would only make them for myself. When my friends found out I was making them, they wanted me to make them one too. They were my some of my first customers.
In 2018 when I went on maternity leave from my job, I decided to invest in a wig making course. I launched my business that next year on August 26th. I chose that day because it’s my great grandmothers birthday. She passed away when I was a little girl.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road has not been easy. But the road to success is never easy.
I’ve encountered many struggles such as finding my target audience, building clientele, and even the struggle of keeping clients. I’ve also struggled with marketing.
Nowadays, social media plays a huge part in marketing and reaching your target audience. I had to learn to use my social media outlets for business and not for fun.
I’ve also struggled with things such as time management and simply staying motivated. Being an entrepreneur, a mom, a wife, and a full time employee is a lot. But I manage to get things done. There are days when I just do not feel like but I know that my business isn’t going to run itself so I have to get up and get to it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Aside from being a wig maker, I am a full time nurse. Nursing is and will always be my first love. My background is in ER and trauma. One of the things I am most proud of as a nurse is really being able to make an impact in the lives of others.
I’ve held patients’ hands during one of the scariest moments of their lives. I’ve also held patients’ hands as they took their last breaths. I have seen some pretty gruesome things as an ER nurse but I’ve also witnessed some pretty amazing life-changing moments.
Being able to give patients hope and another chance at life outside of those hospital doors is what I love most about being a nurse.
What matters most to you?
My family is what matters to me most, especially my husband and our children. They give me something to look forward to each day and they keep me on my toes.
They give me the motivation and strength that I need to make it on the days I simply do not feel like it.
